Almost one year after the last major release, and just in time for Christmas, ScummVM 2.9.0 - "Close Encounters of the 2.9th Kind" has landed. Amongst its gifts, you will find 15 newly supported games and a new supported platform.

## New platform
ScummVM now has an official Sailfish OS port. While we are waiting for official builds to appear, adventurous users are welcome to build their own and very personalized copy!

## Notable engine enhancements
The AGS engine has been brought up to version 3.6.1.30 from upstream, which adds support for some recently released games, such as Stranger in Utopia, The Phantom Fellows, and It Takes Two to Tangle.

Keymapper support was added to more than 20 engines, allowing customization of the keys, mouse buttons, and joystick buttons used to play the games.

The SCI engine benefits from numerous script fixes for various games and an impressive speech repair feature for Gabriel Knight 1 CD.

The SCUMM engine sees graphics and audio improvements for the Macintosh version of several games.

## Notable platform enhancements
The macOS release for recent Intel and Apple Silicon systems has been signed and notarized, so it has been accepted by Apple Gatekeeper.

The Android release now supports Android 15 and has improved gamepad support.

The iOS release adds support for the Apple Pencil, which was one of the most requested features.

On [our downloads page](https://www.scummvm.org/downloads/), you can find the downloads for various platforms. The iOS version is available in the [Apple App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/scummvm/id6446184412) and the Android versions should soon be available in the [Google Play Store](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.scummvm.scummvm) (once the update has been approved). If you are using Windows, macOS, or either the Ubuntu Snap or Flatpak packages, the autoupdater will assist you in updating to ScummVM 2.9.0.

Our macOS users with a 64-bit Intel Mac and a macOS version between 10.9 and 10.12 will need to download manually the new update from [our downloads page](https://www.scummvm.org/downloads/) using the "Mac OS X 10.9+ Intel 64 Bits (without Sparkle) Disk Image" download. The version downloaded using the auto-update feature now requires macOS 10.13 or above.

We've been working for a while on the next ScummVM release, and it is time for a call for public testing.

Support for a number of new engines and games for the existing ones was added, and we need your special attention to the following titles:

Besides these newly supported games, almost half of the current 108 engines have notable changes. Thus, testing more games is always a good thing.

ScummVM Team is proud to announce support for a small freeware RPG game named <i>The Griffon Legend</i>. It was [originally](http://syn9.thehideoutgames.com/index_backup.php) written in the FreeBASIC programming language by Daniel "Syn9" Kennedy and later ported by Dmitry Smagin to the GCW0 console, which we base this port on.

The original story says:

>500 years after the Griffon-Dragon war, the Dragons have
returned to reclaim their empire. Cities are falling,
everyone is dying, and the lone Griffon Knight Fayne is
caught up in the middle of it all.

Since the game is freeware, you may grab a copy directly from our game [downloads page](https://www.scummvm.org/games/) or from the [original site](http://syn9.thehideoutgames.com/index_backup.php?table=griffonlegend). You will need the latest [development build](https://buildbot.scummvm.org/#/snapshots) to play it. **Update:** we were unable to reserve the plumbervm.org domain and thus, with a heavy heart, we decided to abandon our rebranding effort and go back to our old name. Long live ScummVM!

The issue of the name of ScummVM has been raised many times since we started to add engines for non-SCUMM games. Until now we decided to keep the original name. However, the addition today of an engine for *Plumbers Don't Wear Ties* changes everything. Due to its fame and reputation for being one of the best video game ever, it naturally becomes the flagship of what we stand for. Thus we have finally decided to change our name. We are now **PlumberVM**!

We used the name ScummVM for over 15 years, and this is with sadness that we say goodbye to it. It is a well known name and we do not underestimate the effort it will take to get the same recognition for our new name. Thus we are calling on your help to spread the news. In the short term this will inevitably lead to some disruption and confusion. But in the long term we are convinced that this is the right decision. With your support we will conquer the world! Starting from the sewers.

With the change of name we have also decided to expand even more the scope of our project. Last year we decided to accept engines for RPG games in addition to adventure games. Now we are also accepting any games that feature a plumber. Work has already started on the little known *Super Mario Bros.*, and we have big plans for the future. We will have a big announcement soon, so stay tuned.

On a final note, it will take time for us to update all the places where our name appears. We have started today with our main website and you will notice in the next few days the change spreading to our social media accounts, wiki, forum and the pages not yet updated on our web site. We are also working on releasing PlumberVM 2.0 with the addition of two new supported games: *Plumbers Don't Wear Ties* and *Full Pipe*. This will happen as soon as the last few bugs in our engines for *Plumbers Don't Wear Ties* and *Full Pipe* have been squashed. Hopefully we won't find mutant turtles during testing. Squashing those is a real pain!
**Nachtrag:** Wir konnten uns die Domain plumbervm.org nicht sichern und daher entschieden wir uns schweren Herzens dazu, unsere Bemühungen zur Umbenennung aufzugeben und zu unserem alten Namen zurückzukehren. Lang lebe ScummVM!

Die Sache mit dem Namen von ScummVM wurde viele Male gestellt, seit wir damit angefangen haben, Engines für Nicht-SCUMM-Spiele hinzuzufügen. Bis jetzt waren wir dafür, den ursprünglichen Namen beizubehalten. Jedoch mit der heutigen Hinzufügung einer Engine für das Spiel *Plumbers Don't Wear Ties* ändert sich alles. Wegen seines Rufs und Ansehens als bestes Videospiel aller Zeiten wird es natürlich zum Flaggschiff dafür, wofür wir stehen. Daher haben wir uns letztendlich dazu entschlossen, unseren Namen zu ändern. Wir heißen nun **PlumberVM**!

Wir haben den Namen ScummVM über 15 Jahre lang verwendet und es fällt uns schwer, uns von ihm zu verabschieden. Es ist ein durchaus bekannter Name und wir unterschätzen nicht den Aufwand, den es benötigen wird, um dieselbe Anerkennung für unseren neuen Namen zu bekommen. Daher bitten wir um Ihre Mithilfe, um die Neuigkeit zu verbreiten. Auf kurze Sicht wird dies unvermeidlich zu Spaltung und Verwirrung führen. Aber auf lange Sicht sind wir davon überzeugt, dass dies die richtige Entscheidung ist. Mit Ihrer Unterstützung werden wir die Welt erobern! Angefangen bei den Abflusskanälen.

Mit der Änderung des Namens haben wir ebenso eine Erweiterung des Umfangs unseres Projekts beschlossen. Letztes Jahr haben wir uns dazu entschieden, neben Engines für Adventures auch solche für RPG-Spiele zu akzeptieren. Jetzt akzeptieren wir alle Spiele, in denen ein Klempner vorkommt. Die Arbeit am wenig bekannten Spiel *Super Mario Bros.* wurde bereits aufgenommen und wir haben große Pläne für die Zukunft. Wir haben bald eine große Ankündigung zu machen, also bleiben Sie dran.

Abschließend möchten wir darauf hinweisen, dass es einige Zeit in Anspruch nehmen wird, bis wir an sämtlichen Stellen unseren Namen ausgetauscht haben. Wir haben heute mit unserer Haupt-Website angefangen und Sie werden in den nächsten Tagen die Änderung bei unseren Social-Media-Konten, Wiki, Forum und den noch nicht aktualisierten Seiten auf unserer Website feststellen. Wir arbeiten ebenso an der Veröffentlichung von PlumberVM 2.0 mit den zwei neuen unterstützten Spielen *Plumbers Don't Wear Ties* und *Full Pipe*. With great help from game developer Deirdra Kiai and Wintermute developer Jan Nedoma the ScummVM Team is pleased to announce support for our first Wintermute game: [*Chivalry is Not Dead*](http://www.deirdrakiai.com/my-games/). So, download a copy of the game and start playing in the [latest daily build](/downloads/#daily) of ScummVM and help us with testing this open-ended game.
